Al-Ijabah Mosque

An Overview:

Al-Ijabah Mosque is a small Prophetic prayer ground to the north of the Prophet’s Mosque. It was first built by Banu Muawiyah during the time of the Prophet (ﷺ).

Its Story:

The mosque was called “Al-Ijabah” (Answer) due to an incident associated with the Prophet (ﷺ). It was narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) came one day from Aliya area in Madinah until he reached the Mosque of Banu Muawiyah. He entered the mosque and performed two rak’ahs together with some of his companions (RA). After a long supplication of his Lord, he turned to his companions and said: “I asked my Lord three things, and He has granted me two, but has withheld one. I asked Him that my ummah not be destroyed by drought, and He granted me that. I begged him that my ummah may not be destroyed by drowning (deluge) and He granted me that.

Finally, I begged Him not to cause division among them, but He didn’t grant me that.” Subsequently, the mosque became known as Al-Ijabah Mosque.

Its History:

  • It was first built during the life of the Prophet (ﷺ) by Banu Muawiyah.
  • The mosque was renovated during the reign of Omar bin Abdulaziz. In the ninth century, its walls were restored.
  • In 1418 AH, during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd, the mosque was rebuilt and expanded. The total area of the mosques after expansion is ​​1,000 square meters.
  • The internal area of the mosque is about 500 square meters, 4 times its area in the tenth century AH.
  • To rehabilitate and improve it and enhance its historical identity, it was listed in the Reconstruction Project of Historic Mosques.

    • Its Access:

    The mosque is about 580 meters to the north of the Prophet’s Mosque. It is open to visitors throughout the day. Obligatory prayers are held in the mosque. It is a historical landmark and a destination for the visitors of Madinah.
