Well of Rumah and Othman:
It is a well in Madinah that still bears witness to the Prophet’s era and the way Muslims lived then. It was named after the great companion Rumah al-Ghafari al-Kinani. It is also known as the well of Othman because Othman ibn Affan bought it and gave it as charity for Muslims.
Name and Location of the Well:
The well is known by two names; namely,
1. Well of Rumah, named after its owner, Rumah.
2. The well of Othman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. It was named after him because he bought it and donated it as charity endowment to Muslims.
The well is located within a farm called Othman's Farm, about 5 km to the northwest of the Prophet’s Mosque. The farm is situated in the lower part of the blessed Al-Aqiq Valley, near the stream confluence.
A Well that leads to Paradise:
When the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, emigrated to Madinah, Muslims were suffering from a shortage of fresh water. There were only a few privately owned wells. Therefore, he, blessings and peace be upon him, urged his companions to buy the well and give it in charity for the Muslims, promising whoever did that with Paradise. Othman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, bought it and donated it to the public interest of Muslims.
It is reported that the well was owned by a man who used to sell its water to Muslims who could not afford it. To win the reward, Othman, may Allah be pleased with him, bought the well and gave it as charity for Muslims.
Important Historical Landmark:
The well of Rumah is one of the first endowments in Islam. It was donated as charity shortly after the emigration of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and Muslims to Madinah. It was also one of the few wells with fresh water at that time. Hence, it was very important to all Muslims.
It is one of the most significant landmarks that attests to the way Muslims lived in Madinah.
The Well in the Saudi Era:
Throughout the centuries, this well has remained a prominent historical landmark that has a long history. Historians and hadith scholars of the different eras narrated its story. The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia paid much attention to it. It built a vast garden around the well, i.e., Othman ibn Affan Park, besides building a model farm and central technical poultry houses, etc.
The well is now under the management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water. It was drained and repaired, so its water increased. It is surrounded by a large farm containing a nursery and an apiary.
It still stands today. Visitors of Madinah can access it through paved roads .
